THE LION
The lion is called the 'king of beasts' because of its great beauty and strength. It is a member of the cat family. It is found in the Gir forest of India and also in the jungles of Africa.
The lion has beautiful golden brown colour. Its bushy hair around it's head and neck is called the mane. It's makes him look grand and beautiful. The lion's thundering roar frightens all. It kills and eats other animals.
Lions can live in cool climates as well as in intense heat. They live in groups known as a pride. A pride may consist of 20-sometimes even 30-lions. They live in a place where food and water are close by.
The young one of a lion is called a cub. When a cub is born, it is blind and helpless. The mother lioness moves her cubs from one hiding place to another. She carries them in her mouth to protect them from hyenas and leopards. The lioness looks after them for about 18 to 24 months. By then the cubs are confident enough to hunt on their own.
We can see lions in a sanctuary or in a zoo. All admire its strength and royal appearance.
